Silent concert headphones: hear the band as the sound engineer does
Silent concert headphones send the live mix straight to every listener, so bands, choirs and pianists can perform where amplified sound is not an option.

A silent concert flips the usual logic. Instead of filling a space with speakers, the sound engineer sends the mix straight to wireless headphones. Each listener hears the performance with studio clarity, at their own volume, while the space around stays almost silent. Art galleries, old churches, botanical gardens, wine cellars and city rooftops become possible venues even where amplified music is out of the question.
We know this format well. With the Yamaha Silent Experience, a piano concert became an experience in headphones, reaching places a traditional concert could not. The same technology suits acoustic sets, jazz evenings, choirs, collaborations between DJs and musicians, and immersive listening sessions. The musicians play live, the audience listens in headphones, and a second channel can carry commentary or a translation for a multilingual audience. Picture a sunset set in a Franschhoek garden or an intimate gig at a forest venue near Knysna.
Why choose silent concert headphones
Studio-quality sound
Every listener receives the mix from the desk, clear and balanced, wherever they sit or stand.
New venues for live music
Galleries, heritage buildings and gardens can host live music without amplification.
Personal volume
Each listener sets their own level, which makes the concert comfortable for all ages.
Extra channels
Add a channel for commentary, translation or an alternative mix.
Quiet for the neighbours
Outdoor concerts in residential areas become much easier to plan.
Bass that holds up
Super Power Bass® tuning keeps the low end that wireless systems often lose.
How a silent concert works
Connect the mixing desk
The sound engineer sends the main mix to a transmitter via XLR. Other channels can carry separate mixes.
Hand out headphones
Listeners collect headphones at the door and choose the channel, guided by the LED colours.
Play live
The band performs with stage monitors kept low, and the audience hears every detail.
Setting up headphones for a concert
For a seated concert, plan one headphone per listener plus spares. For a standing audience of 300 in a courtyard or on a lawn, 300 headphones and a TX-350 are a typical starting point.
- Headphone model: the SX-553 Evolution HiFi suits detailed listening; the SX-809 Super Power Bass brings fuller bass for electronic sets.
- Transmitters: one per channel; the TX-500 for large outdoor spaces, the TX-330 where there is no power on site.
- Indicative prices: up to 200 headphones €850–1,000, up to 500 €1,700–2,000, before shipping to South Africa and customs.
- Help choosing: compare the models on the silent disco headphones page.
Tips for a successful silent concert
- Soundcheck in headphones: the engineer should check the mix on a headphone, not just on the monitors.
- Quiet stage: keep stage volume low so the space stays calm for listeners.
- Explain the format: a short welcome at the start helps the audience settle in.
- Seated or standing: both work; for seated concerts, place headphones on the chairs before doors open.
- Second channel: use it for the artist's commentary or a translation into another of South Africa's languages.

Silent concerts are also a strong format for cultural programmes. Galleries can host musicians among the artworks, gardens can welcome a string quartet at sunset, and rooftops can offer intimate sets above the traffic. Because the sound reaches each listener directly, a small audience gets the same detail as a large one, and older or sensitive listeners keep the volume exactly where they want it.

Questions about: silent concerts
Can a live band play with silent headphones?
Yes. The sound engineer sends the mix to the transmitter and the audience listens in headphones. Keep stage volume low for the best result.
Is the sound good enough for classical music or jazz?
Yes. The SX-553 Evolution HiFi is designed for detailed, natural listening, and radio transmission has no delay.
Can we offer translation on a second channel?
Yes. One channel can carry the concert and another a commentary or a translation.
How far can listeners be from the transmitter?
Up to 500 metres in open space, enough for a large garden or an amphitheatre lawn.
Do you supply the sound engineer?
For larger events, rental with assistance includes technicians for our system; the sound engineering of the performance stays with your team.
